Bay Area Food Bank - Backpacks for Kids
www.bayareafoodbank.org
The mission of the Backpack Program is to meet the needs of chronically hungry children. We meet this need by providing easy-to-prepare food for children to take home on weekends and school vacations when other resources are not available.
Bay Area Food Bank's Backpack Program is targeted toward schools that have a high incidence of children in need. Students are referred to the program by teachers and counselors. Each backpack site distributes a pack of food to each participating child on Friday afternoon at no cost to the children or the school. The Backpack Program is not federally funded, therefore we rely on donations from corporate/community sponsors, individuals and grants for the program.
The typical backpack contains a variety of easy-to-prepare food usually including protein, grains and fruit. A bag of food is placed discreetly in each child's backpack to carry food home for themselves and their siblings. The weight of the food bag is less than five pounds. A typical weekend supply of food for one child could include the following items:
- Â individual cereal or oatmeal packs
- pop-top meals (such as beef ravioli, macaroni and cheese or chili
- pudding cups
- fruit cups or applesauceÂ
- miscellaneous snacks (granola bar, peanut butter crackers, etc.)
Camp Bluebird
www.campbluebirdfl.com
Camp Bluebird is an adult Cancer Survivor Camp. We are hosted by Sacred Heart Health System. The camp is a three day two night retreat where adults get to sit back be pampered and become kids again without any worries. We operate camp twice a year once in the spring and once in the fall. The camp is staffed completely by volunteers, including several nurses (so that we can handle almost all situations) that give of their time freely to make the most amazing experience happen for our campers. During camp we have small group meetings, Doc-in-the-Box, arts and crafts, self-help sessions, pampering sessions (massages, facials, Happy shots), lots of free time, and best of all is our Thursday night Theme night.
Past organizations we have partnered with:
Achilles Divers. Achilles Divers is a unique and interesting non-profit organization dedicated to helping those with limited mobility.  Learn about their program here: http://achillesdivers.org/
"For people with conditions causing limited mobility- spending time underwater can be liberating. While submerged, adaptive divers are free from the often painful confines of Earth's gravity- the continual force that requires the control and use of extremities in order for one to be completely mobile."
