Horsepower serves as a term we've all most likely heard of at least once in car commercials or just casual conversation at the track or auto store. But what does horsepower really mean? The term was coined by engineer James Watt, who lived from 1736 to 1819. As a means to popularize steam engines, he came up with a comparable unit of measurement: horsepower.

Watt observed ponies lifting coal at a coal mine. On average, he estimated that a single pony could do 22,000 foot-pounds of work a minute. An increase by 50%, he measured it to be at 33,000 foot-pounds a minute.

With that being said, how does this relate to your car? If one were to say your car had only one horsepower, that would be the equivalent of a pony pulling only 33 pounds of coal a minute.
