Virtually everybody knows what tires are – those rubber things on vehicles that help you grip the road when you drive – although surprisingly few people understand the mechanisms of how tire tread help vehicles adhere to the road.

The patterns cut into rubber tires are called tread. When water is present, tread channels water that the tires pick up from the ground thanks to centripetal force. As the water is pushed outwards, tires are better able to grip the road. If tires do not have tread, water can pool up underneath tires, potentially causing the vehicle to sits on such puddles and hydroplane – slipping, sliding, fishtailing, but all in a not-good way.

So, how do you know if you need a new tire? Measurements of tired tread are taken in the 32nds of inches. If 2/32-inch or less of tire tread is left, you need a new tire. This can be discerned with the penny test – sticking the penny head-down into the tread.

If you aren’t sure if you need new tires or not, you should consider getting a new set. Come to our location, Pensacola Honda.
