Car Knowledge: The Importance of Gaskets

Your car's gaskets are important because they keep fluids and gases from leaking and mixing. There are hundreds of gaskets in your vehicle, and although they are long-lasting, they will need to be replaced with time. If you keep a deteriorating gasket in your vehicle, then it can cause damage that is expensive to repair.

Gaskets are made from a variety of materials, but most gaskets are made of multi-level steel. Gaskets can also be made of rubber, copper, and other materials that are designed to withstand extreme temperatures. The most common gaskets in your vehicle are head gaskets, but there are also intake multifold gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, and bearing gaskets.

There are signs that can let you know that your gaskets are deteriorating. Bubbling, foaming, or gurgling coming from the radiator can indicate that high compression levels caused holes to develop in some of the gaskets. If you notice white fluid when you are checking the oil level, then it could mean that one of your gaskets is failing.
